Orchis militaris x purpurea

(hybrid between Lady and Military Orchids)

Photographed by Tony Hughes

Southern France

Because the Military Orchid is so rare in this country, this particular hybrid is extremely unlikely to be found. On the continent, however, the two parents frequently occur together and the hybrid is often encountered. The most obvious distinguishing features are the sepals, which are as large as those of O. militaris but have the spotting of O. purpurea.
